The American Bobtail is a naturally occurring bobtailed cat, the bobtail being a dominant gene.    A noticeably athletic animal, they are well muscled and have the appearance of great power. They are a meduim to large cat with the body being moderately long and noticeably rectangular. American Bobtails are a slow maturing breed, often taking 2-3 years to reach full maturity.  The tail should be clearly visible above their backs when the cat is alert and can range from 1" in length to hock length.  Even though the bobtail is a dominant gene, it is possible to for some kittens to be born with a full tail .  The head is a broad modified wedge-shaped with large almond shaped eyes that give them a natural hunting look.  These cats are determined hunters because of their feral beginnings, however, their need to hunt can easily be satisfied with little more than ambushing  their cunning toys,rampaging house flys and on occassion, the tails of  their unsuspecting canine housemates.

The American Bobtails are loving, kind and often noted for their dog-like personalities and devotion to their human partners.  They have a great fondness for games such as fetch and a real knack for collecting anything shiny to carry off to add to their hidden treasure chests!  

Because they are known to be good travelers, they have often been purchased by long distance truck drivers for companions and have been used in numerous therapy treatment programs because they are so well-behaved and are sensitive to people in distress and most have a great sense of humor and enjoy playing the clown whenever they can gather an audience.
